Addiction Never Ends

Yet you choose your poison

“I have absolutely no pleasure in the stimulants in which I sometimes so madly indulge. It has not been in the pursuit of pleasure that I have periled life and reputation and reason. It has been the desperate attempt to escape from torturing memories, from a sense of insupportable loneliness and a dread of some strange impending doom.”
Edgar Allan Poe

Once an addict, always an addict.

Or so they say…

You’re addicted to that continuous drinking of whiskey. Or perhaps you’re addicted to porn. Maybe it’s that enticing needle you let watch poke you into your arm until you forget all else. Might it be your social media? Or maybe it’s that boy across the street in which you keep a close eye. Or maybe it’s a different type of needle: tattoos? Or that razor you keep hidden under your bathroom sink. Maybe you’re addicted to chasing love in all the wrong ways. Or is it keeping up with the fashion that’s constantly changing, alongside you? You’re addicted to money (even though you have a million dollars stashed away for a rainy day). Or freedom. Or struggle. Depression. The façade of joy, eternal. Or maybe… you’re not entirely sure what you’re addicted to, other than feeling some sort of way — until that feeling becomes too familiar, so you chase after something more.

something more

They say once you’re an addict, you’re always an addict.

And maybe that’s true. Fuck — I’d know, right?

I’ve had addictive tendencies: I won’t disclose to you all of them, or it might fool you into thinking I’m just that… a fool.

But I’ve also had healthy habits that I constantly turn to, lest my mind, body, and soul turn against me in all the wrong ways.

My dad’s made it clear that you can’t run from addiction, no matter how strong a state of mind you might be in, for a day.

He’s also made it quite clear you can turn addiction into something that’s of use to you and quite possibly even society.

You can turn to marathons and protests for the greater good. You can turn to love that’s not utterly unhealthy. You can turn to exercise, running your body into the ground until it’s…
