Filthy Chaos: Life

i look over my shoulder —

toward the abyss beyond me —

and weep until the dried river yonder

is replete with the tears i cry,

hopeful the water will run itself

through the cracking world

that is thirsty for sorrowed honesty

because the truth is all we have anymore,

to remind us of what’s even real

and beautiful

amid this filthy chaos we call

life
