Tiny Little Butterfly

--

when you kiss my forehead

or hold my hand

or lean in to whisper

a sweet nothing into my ear,

i imagine a tiny little butterfly

trapped inside the cage of my stomach

and then my chest —

forcing my heart to pump itself faster

just to keep pace

with the flapping wings of the stunning butterfly

that also bring about

all my nerves to race
