What is Once in a Lifetime, Anyway?
What a rare, once in a lifetime opportunity that is for you.
I can’t begin to count the amount of times people have said that to me — be it aimed toward my trip to India or my lonesome move to a new city without a job in mind or my success in writing a book in a mere six weeks or my lovely hike in the depths of the Grand Canyon. People seem to have this mindset that amazing rarities or extravagant endeavors only come along once in life. What limited thinking this is!
I remember the first time I traveled overseas for two weeks, and all my co-workers told me to take thousands of pictures so I could always remember this once in a lifetime opportunity to travel. But then I traveled again. And again. And again. Why do exciting events in our lives need to happen just once? We choose our lives’ roads at the end of the day. Are there sometimes trees that fall on our paths, leading us to choose to climb atop it or find a different path? Abso-fucking-lutely. But do we still have the ultimate choice in our power? Of course!
When I wrote a book, I was told it was my big, once in a lifetime event. How ridiculously stupid is that? I don’t want to stop at just one. Nor do I want to stop at two. Or five. Or ten. I dream to write for as long as I am able, and so I shall. Same with travel! Why limit ourselves…
