Your Namesake
Your name is the world, and so are you
“You were born a star; autograph your life with excellent works.”
― Matshona Dhliwayo
I step outside the realm of forever and find myself in the here and now.
I dip my toes into the cooling waters, sending shivers up and down my spine.
I can feel you in my bones. Might you feel me, too?
They say forever is just a word, but I think maybe (just maybe) it’s a place, instead.
In this place of forever, you’re alive inside my heart, my soul, my essence.
Your name forever rings true to itself, as if you were given this namesake for a reason.
Am I that reason?
I can hear your name on repeat, as the waves crash subtly against my toes. My feet. My skin.
My naked skin…
You used to tell me that we’d be forever, as we walked this shore, hand in hand.
But now?
Now I walk alone, looking behind me to try to remember your footprints alongside mine.
But as I gawk at my past, I can’t even see my own footprints — swept away by the carrying waters, just over yonder.
